My current school lunch can be classified as “bare minimum”, heated up, freezer items are not fit to be served to children, let alone does it meet the guidelines for a proper nutritional intake. When something has to be frozen in order to prevent expiration, there is no telling how long it’s been sitting around for, but people eat it anyway. The school food not only likes proper nutrients, but it also likes variety and taste, which is why my proposal is to have schools implement a more eclectic variety of breakfast/lunch options. The thing that most schools like when it comes to food options is inclusivity, they don’t take into account the dietary needs of some children, and end up favoring the well-being of the faculty rather than the kids. Yes, packing lunch is also an option, but the amount of children who attend public schools cannot afford to pack their own lunch, significantly outweighs the minority of children who can. I think it would be beneficial for the school is to hire cooks instead of ”preparers” to create the food that the kids eat. By doing this, it would open up an entirely new perspective on meals, ingredients, etc. Personally, I am fine with the current school menu, though the way the food is prepped and served does not benefit anyone. In the event that actual chefs were hired to cook the school lunches, it would be a smart choice for the school, to put their funds towards buying food, sustainably from local farmers, farmers markets, or even buy ingredients and bought from stores like Costco or Sam’s Club.
