NBA MLK Justice Advocacy Competition
The National Bar Association (NBA) and MetLife, Inc. continue to honor Dr. King's legacy through the NBA's signature program, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition. This competition encourages high school students to express their views on a pre-selected topic and is designed to allow these students to become aware of current events/issues and analyze these issues while enhancing their public speaking and oratorical skills. The annual competition is showcased throughout the NBA's twelve regions (12) across the United States and at the annual convention & exhibits. This year's national competition will be held during the NBA's 88th Annual Convention & Exhibits in Miami, Florida. 2013 MLK Competition Question: Trayvon Martin was killed walking to his home on February 26, 2012 by George Zimmerman, a Florida neighborhood watchman in a gated community. Some have justified Zimmerman's actions based on the Florida Stand Your Ground Law. If Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive today, would he advocate to repeal the Florida Stand Your Ground Law and other similar laws? Please discuss why or why not.
